Nowadays, the policy on immigration is not so strict in Laos. There have been some loopholes in the government system. Many immigrants are coming each year. In a way, it is good, but in a way it creates more problems into the society such as robbery. However, several immigrants came and reboot our economy especially some Vietnamese and Chinese people doing business in Laos. I would not really want to be an immigrant in my country because a lot of immigrants in Laos don’t have civil rights. Other than that, there is little discrimination too. Many poor immigrants were looked down while the riches are considered respectful. Most people immigrating to Laos expect to have a better life. So those people are inspired to work harder by being victims of discrimination. Generally speaking, immigration in Laos is still an issue for the government to either abolish or allow.
i am curious if there are many Chinese immigrants in Laos...
ReplyDeleteas for the discriminations which i think exsit all over the world...
There are a lot of Chinese immigrants in my country too.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry I forgot to mention that there will be a new and second China town in Laos for the next couple years. Lao and Chinese governement has agreed to have a mutual benefits. So I hope there will not be a discrimination occured.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I don't think people would immigrant to Laos nowadays. This is because the labor cost is pretty low. Neither does Malaysia though, because Singapore has become their first choice.
ReplyDeleteI like your phrase "Working harder by being the victims of discrimination". We have the same situation here in Thailand. Those immigrants who have well-beings get respect from the society but for those who moved to Thailand for better life are looked down. The worse thing is that they (Thai) feel Caucasian people are superior even though they haven't known them.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that its a big problem when so many people try to immigrate to Laos. I can imagine that many people from Laos are worrying about their jobs when you have so many immigrants? Are there many people without jobs in Laos?
ReplyDeleteYes, we have 2.4% of unemployment rate in 2005 est. But I think it will be increasing nowsaday due to the global financial crisis. A lot of people have lost their jobs.
ReplyDelete@Hooda, perhaps it is due to we are neighbor. We are usually close for almost every single thing that we have and do.
ReplyDelete@Eng Hwa: You are probably right. But in some way, I still think that a lot of people are immigrating to Laos. One of the reason I guess is that we have a lot more spaces or less populated cities.
